HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — A Hilton Head Island family has sued the Beaufort County School District over a former teacher’s alleged inappropriate contact with the family’s son.
The Island Packet reports (http://bit.ly/1ITPVc2) the family also says that in 2013, the district knew of an illicit relationship between 25-year-old Margaret Ann LaMantia and the then-16-year-old student, but permitted the long-term Spanish substitute at Hilton Head Island High School to serve as an assistant wrestling coach, allowing her contact with many other male students.
District spokesman Jim Foster says LaMantia never served as an assistant coach. He says officials terminated LaMantia as soon as they learned of the allegations.
LaMantia was sentenced last year to up to six years in prison for inappropriate contact with the son, including sending him a nude photograph of herself. She was released after four months.
