SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – In Summerville, firefighters will soon see a change in the way they are paid.
Summerville Fire-Rescue will switch from salary-based pay to an hourly pay rate.
Chief Richard Waring said the older payment system was confusing and did not fairly compensate firefighters for overtime pay.
The Town of Summerville has budgeted an additional $150,000 to pay for the new payment schedule. The change will not lead to an increase in taxes. The town has additional revenue from growth in the area.
The new payroll plan is similar to what other area fire departments utilize.
“It’s just a cleaner method to compensate our firefighters and kind of also brings us line with what the other fire departments in our area are doing,” said Chief Waring. “We’re one of the few remaining fire departments in the area that still use the salary system.”
The new plan will begin on Feb. 26.
