Lockdown at several schools due to unverified social media threat lifted

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) — A code yellow lockdown at several area schools is being lifted, according to the Mount Pleasant Police Department.

The schools were on Code Yellow lockdown due to an unverified threat received on social media.

“Once the district was made aware of this situation, we immediately placed these schools on Code Yellow out of an abundance of caution,” according to the Charleston County School District. “School Resource Officers are patrolling our campus in order to keep our students and staff safe.”

A School Resource Officer was notified by staff of Laing Middle School that several students received a threatening Snapchat message.

Numerous middle schools and schools adjacent to the middle schools were placed in a Code Yellow lockdown while the messages were investigated. Once investigators determined there was no imminent threat, schools resumed normal operations.

The investigation revealed that a 12-year-old juvenile sent these messages. The juvenile has been charged with Disturbing Schools.

The lockdown affected the following schools:

Primary/Elementary Schools

  • Carolina Park
  • Charles Pinckney
  • Jennie Moore
  • Laurel Hill

Middle Schools:

  • Cario Middle
  • Laing Middle
  • Moultrie Middle

High Schools:

  • Wando High
