On Tuesday, the Charleston City Council is set to consider an ordinance calling for a 6-month moratorium on development permits for home construction on John’s Island.
The measure raises a number of concerns about traffic and flooding on the Island, which has experienced rapid population growth over the last two decades.
According to census data, John’s Island had a population of 10,227 in the year 2000. Right now, the Island’s population is estimated at 17,000.
Access to the Island is limited to either Maybank Highway or Main Road. During rush hour, traffic on these roads is often reduced to a crawl.
Tuesday’s council meeting will also include a public hearing on construction moratoriums for James Island and the Church Creek Drainage Basin in West Ashley.
