RESTAURANT REPORT CARD: Mt. Pleasant Japanese restaurant receives C grade

CHARLESTON SC (WCBD) — The Department of Health and Environmental Control gave more than 100 A grades to Charleston County restaurants.

39 Rue de Jean received an A grade on January 25. It received a B grade the previous week.

Manny’s in West Ashley also received an A grade in a follow-up inspection.

However, a DHEC inspector gave a C grade to Kanpai Japanese Restaurant in Mount Pleasant.

Some of the violations:

-The owner’s dog was in the facility at the time of the inspection. There was also evidence that the dog eats and sleeps in the kitchen.

-The DHEC inspector noted that a food handler picked up the dog, exited the building, and then returned and continued working without washing hands.

-The handwashing sinks also had issues with its drain. The handwashing sinks also did not have soap or paper towels.

-In the coolers, the inspector noted raw meats were stored with ready to eat foods. That causes a potential for cross contamination.

-Cold foods were also stored warmer than the required 41 degrees. For example, the temperature for sushi rice was above 70 degrees.

A follow-up inspection is to be performed at Kanpai by February 2.

China Dragon received a B grade this week. Rodent droppings were found.

Other B grades include Crust on Maybank Highway and Whole Foods (Prepared foods/Bakery) in Mt. Pleasant.

Sprout in Mount Pleasant and Lowdown Oven and Bar on Folly Road also received B grades this week, but they both have an A grade after a follow-up inspection.
