All bridges around the Lowcountry now open

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) — The South Carolina Lowcountry is thawing out after a rare bout of freezing rain and drizzle coated several bridges in ice.

From Charleston to Myrtle Beach, bridges had to be shut down to be de-iced Friday in places that see wintery weather maybe only a couple of times a decade.

The Don Holt Bridge, Ravenel Bridge, Isle of Palm Connector, and the Waccamaw River Bridge were all closed at one point. The four bridges are now back open.

Midway Fire and Rescue said the Waccamaw River Bridge was closed for several hours because of the ice, cutting off the only route directly connecting Charleston and Myrtle Beach.

Now the Carolinas are bracing for more than a week of well below normal temperatures.
