CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)- Fire crews responded to a home on Halsey Street shortly before 10 AM Monday morning. The first firefighters on scene saw smoke coming out of the second floor balcony. Crews began to extinguish the flames and found the fire had spread into the wall and attic space, with most of the damage contained to the balcony.
The people in the home at the time were able to escape without any injuries.
The Charleston Fire Marshal Division is investigating the fire and found multiple car batteries, electronic equipment on the balcony powered by solar panels on the roof of the home. The property owner confirmed that he had created a small solar power system on the balcony. The specific cause of the fire is still unknown, but fire marshals believe it is related to an electrical failure within the solar power system.
Five people are currently displaced from the three units within the building.
