Turning fun play into educational experiences, St. Andrews Presbyterian Weekday School has helped to provide an early strong educational foundation for young children for over half a century. We’re in West Ashley for our Cool School of the week.
St. Andrews Presbyterian Weekday School on Wappoo Road has a long history in the West Ashley area. Director Carol Laquiere says, “This is our 67th year. The school started in 1950 as a ministry outreach of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, so we’ve been here a long time. I attended kindergarten here, both of my grandsons went here, and I’ve been here for a long long time.”
The school serves children from 12 months to 4-year-old kindergarten. Laquiere says, “It’s a labor of love. I have a wonderful group of teachers who all love these children as if they were their own, very supportive parents who are involved in the school. We work very hard at designing a curriculum that’s very hands on, a program where joy and learning go hand in hand. We want the children to be able to experience and have fun.” Parent Emmy Brooks says, “It’s a small school, so we have the opportunity to really get to know the families. It’s so wonderful to leave your children with people that you trust, and that you know will keep them safe and educated and have fun too.”
Students have an opportunity to learn in a hands on way, and are exposed to Spanish, music, art, movement, and Bible study. Two-year-old lead teacher Lisa Dubay says, “Our director gives us the encouragement and support to design developmentally appropriate curriculum that addresses the whole child, intellectually, spiritually, physically, and using arts in all of that. It has been a great blessing to me to be able to be here” As for the young students, what makes their school cool? Four-year-old Lucas Flowers says, “art and making friends.” Five-year-old Ellison Stoney says,”We work.”
Coming up Friday on News 2, we’ll present St. Andrews Presbyterian Weekday School with our Cool School award.
