CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD)– Charleston County passed the first reading of an advanced installment payment program for real property taxes Thursday night.
It was the first of three reading necessary for the program to go into effect.
Taxpayers who participate in the program would pre-pay, every other month, 5 equal installments of taxes beginning February 15th and ending October 15th. The payments would be based on their previous year tax bill.
Their 6th payment would be the balance due of the current tax year bill and may reflect changes from the year prior such as a millage change.
Currently, 13 counties in the state offer a similar ordinance, including Anderson, Beaufort, Chesterfield, Clarendon, Dillon, Dorchester, and Georgetown.
If approved, the program would be available for those eligible in 2019.
Community leaders say this program will help those struggling to retain their properties. They hope the program will ease the stress of paying one lump sum at the end of the year.
