Escaped church break-in suspect arrested in Walterboro

RUFFIN, S.C. (WCBD) — A man who escaped from the custody has been arrested, according to the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office.

At about 7:15 p.m. on December 6, Vernon Brandon Johnson, 22, was arrested for breaking into the Shiloh Baptist Church.

Johnson escaped from a deputy’s vehicle while wearing handcuffs. The 22-year-old was not found after deputies and a K9 unit responded to track his location.

Vernon Brandon Johnson was arrested on Friday, December 8 on Cumberland Street in Walterboro.

The 22-year-old is charged with malicious damage to property, petit larceny, resisting arrest, and escape.

Johnson will be held at the Colleton County Detention Center pending a bond hearing.
