The action at Amazon’s San Marcos fulfillment center on Cyber Monday x
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Cyber Monday is one of the busiest days of the year for online retail giant Amazon — but, besides adding additional workers, the process to get orders from your computer to your doorstep are the same.
Orders are processed in real-time, so when you click “buy,” it’s sent to an Amazon fulfillment center like the one in San Marcos. A “picker” sales associate calls up an order and requests that item from one of the hundreds of shelves in the warehouse. A special robot drives under the correct shelf and takes it to the associate, who grabs the item and places it in a bin. That bin travels via conveyor belt to a “packer” associate, who picks the correct box size and places the item inside with packing material. A machine spits out the appropriate amount of tape to seal the box and it’s on its way to another conveyor belt, or slide, to head out to be shipped.
