Vehicle found and 3 children safe after Summerville SUV theft

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – Summerville police are searching for a man who stole a Ford Explorer outside a dental office on Harth Place.

Police responded to the vehicle theft around 1:15 a.m. Friday. Three children, ages six, eight and nine, were inside the SUV when it was stolen outside of Summerville Dental.

According to a police report, the mother of the children and owner of the vehicle, who provides cleaning services to Summerville Dental, were unloading cleaning supplies from the SUV. The owner said that the vehicle has a malfunction with the ignition and can be left running while the keys are removed. The SUV was left for 15 minutes with the doors locked and the children sleeping in the back seat before the mother and owner discovered the car was stolen.

Around 2 a.m., the children were found unharmed at their grandmother’s house in Goose Creek. The nine-year-old said the suspect asked him where to drop them off and he gave the suspect his grandmother’s address.

The vehicle was located Friday afternoon, but the investigation is ongoing.
