Fatal accident shut down Savannah Highway

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Officials are investigating after an fatal early morning accident shut down Savannah Highway on Saturday near Adams Run in Charleston County.

St. Paul Fire department, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, Charleston County Rescue, and EMS crews responded to a traffic accident in the 7900 block of Savannah Highway near Highway 174 . The call came in at 12:30am.

Investigators say a car was traveling northbound and a truck was traveling southbound on Highway 17. The car hydroplaned and began to spin into the southbound lanes as the truck was passing. The vehicles collided, and the driver of the car was ejected.

When EMS arrived, they pronounced the driver of the car deceased. It is undetermined if he was wearing his seat belt. The driver and two passengers of the truck were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injures.

Officials later identified the victim who died as 28-year-old Jerell Heyward of Yonges Island.

The accident is under investigation by the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office Selective Traffic Enforcement Unit (STEU).
