Legal fee case dismissed after Slager’s guilty plea

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – A dispute over legal fees for a white ex-police officer charged in the shooting death of a black motorist in South Carolina has been dismissed.

Court documents show Michael Slager’s lawsuit against the Southern States Police Benevolent Association was officially dismissed Tuesday.

That’s the same day the former North Charleston officer pleaded guilty to violating Walter Scott’s civil rights when he shot him to death during an April 2015 traffic stop.

Slager had argued the union failed to provide legal representation he paid for under an insurance policy. The association initially said it wouldn’t pay because Scott’s shooting was outside Slager’s duties as a police officer. That shooting was captured on a dramatic cellphone video.

Slager and the union settled out of court earlier this year for an undisclosed amount.
