Mount Pleasant, S.C.—On Tuesday, friends and family gathered to mourn the death of a teenage girl who died in a hit and run crash on Friday night.
Gracie Benjamin’s life ended at 17 when her car was hit by a Kia Sorrento and the driver took off. The accident happened just before 10 PM on Friday night on I-526, Eastbound, near the Long Point Rd. exit.
Police say they found the man who they think caused the accident, but have not released his name or if he faces any charges. Tuesday, the spokesperson for the Mount Pleasant Police Department told News 2 that the information is on the way.
Gracie Benjamin was a student at Wando high school in the health and science program with plans to be a nurse. Her obituary says she spent her summers serving ice cream at wild dunes resort, eating her fair share and serving large scoops to her friends.
Over the weekend, hundreds of people got together for a vigil on Sullivan’s Island sending tons of balloons into the sky. Her friend Hailey Grace was there and said even then, it still hadn’t hit her. She visited the place where Gracie died trying to realize it had actually happened.
Gracie’s dad died about 2 years ago. Hailey says, it puts peace in her heart knowing she is with her dad watching over all of them.
Gracie’s funeral is Wednesday afternoon at The Church at LifePark in Mount Pleasant.
