Charleston, SC (WCBD) – Jury questioning for the federal death penalty trial for the admitted Emanuel AME Church shooter will start on Wednesday of next week.
Judge Richard Gergel originally set jury questioning to start Tuesday, but the defendant, Dylann Roof asked the judge for more time to prepare for the trial.
The judge expects to get to the pool of 70 jurors by the end of the day on Friday, if this does happen there will be a pre-trial hearing Monday, a break Tuesday and those potential jurors will come on Wednesday.
The second phase of the jury selection process will narrow down the potential juror pool down to 12 jurors and 6 alternates, once this happens the government will begin opening statements followed by the defense’s opening statements.
It is expected witness testimony for the trial will start next week.
Roof, who is representing himself faces 33 federal charges for the shooting at Emanuel AME in June of 2015 that lead to the deaths of nine people.
