Jury in Slager trial want to see transcripts of testimonies; deliberations continue

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — We are now in the final phase of the trial against the former North Charleston police officer charged in the shooting death of an unarmed motorist in 2015.

The jury is now in final deliberations for the Michael Slager trial.

On Thursday, December 1, the jury sent Circuit Judge Clifton Newman two questions. The jury of 11 whites and one African-American wanted testimony transcripts of Slager’s testimony. They also asked for the transcript of testimony from the lead investigator with South Carolina Law Enforcement Division Angela Peterson.

He said the jurors had asked for the transcripts and the attorneys had no objections.

Slager is charged in the shooting death of 50-year-old Walter Scott, who was shot five times in the back while running from a traffic stop in April of last year.

Although Slager was charged with murder after cellphone video of the shooting surfaced, Judge Newman told jurors Wednesday that they could consider a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter.
