North Charleston accepting applications for Citizens Advisory Commission

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — The City of North Charleston is accepting applications from those who wish to serve on its Citizens Advisory Commission on Community | Police Relations.

Two people will be appointed to the commission from each of the city council’s 10 districts and must reside in the district.

Applications are available at the Clerk of Council, inside of North Charleston City Hall, or online at www.northcharleston.org.  The application deadline is December 30, 2016 at noon.

According to the by-laws provided to News 2 by the North Charleston Police Department, membership is designed to provide community representation that respects the diverse composition of the citizens of North Charleston and to assure all citizens have a voice on the Commission.

In selecting members:

  • Each of the 10 City Council members will select 2 commission members from each of the 10 City Council Districts. City Council members from each district may implement their own method for appointing the 2 members. The method should make all efforts to utilize a cross section of the citizens in their district and offer opportunities for public participation.  One suggested method would be for the City Council person, along with the neighborhood community association presidents, to form a committee. The City Council person would chair this committee. This committee should seek public input, review applicants and select 2 commission members who must be residents of that district.
  • The Mayor will select 1 commission member who shall at all times reside in the City of North Charleston.
  • To represent business interests, the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce will select 1 commission member who shall at all times reside in the City of North Charleston.
  • To recognize the importance our youth, play in the success of our community the principals of the following schools select juniors who will be rising seniors to serve as commission members for the next academic school year, 1 from North Charleston High School, 1 from Stall High School, and 1 from Fort Dorchester High School to represent the interests of our youth.
