CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)- Holiday decor is on many people’s to-do list now that Thanksgiving is over but there are some holiday hazards.

“The biggest risk is fire, you do not want when the lights are on at night for fire to envelop the tree, it is pine, it has a lot of pitch and it will catch fire very quickly,” says Ace Hardware store manager Rob Kimzey.

Kimzey advises to look for a fresh tree that does not have any dry pine needles and to keep the tree hydrated once you bring it home.

“Pine trees soak up an amazing amount of water especially in the Charleston heat,” says Kimzey.

Keep decorations away from heat sources and make sure you turn lights off at night.

Check lights and power chords to make sure there are no exposed wires.

The holidays are also a good time to review your fire safety plan and check your smoke detector.
