CHARLESTON S.C. (WCBD) -A mental competency hearing in The United States v Dylann Storm Roof, lasted all day Monday, November 21. The judge did not make a decision on whether or not Roof is fit to stand trial. He hearing is scheduled to continue Tuesday, November 22, at 9 a.m.

Mental competency hearings are typically open to the public; however, last week the Judge ruled to close Mondays hearing in order to protect Roof’s constitutional rights.

Earlier this week, the judge listened to pleas from the family members of the Emanuel AME victims. The judge said he did not want to close the hearing, but based on the information he had from the evaluation, it was necessary. Judge Richard Gergel said he wants to get this done right the first time.
