RUTHERFORD CO., N.C. (WSPA) – Fire crews are continuing to shift their strategy to contain and extinguish the Lake Lure wildfire that has now burned more than 5700 acres.
The North Carolina Forest Service said it will begin backburning operations in Buncombe County near Highway 9. Backburning clears away flammable debris and wood so if fire approaches the area, there is nothing left for it to burn.
Officials made the announcement at a community meeting Wednesday. One woman said she didn’t know she would have to evacuate so soon.
“I’m going to go home and try to get into touch with my husband and my neighbors and let them know that we aren’t going to have a way to get home at the end of today,” said Angelica Archer, who lives near Highway 9 in Buncombe County.
Parts of Buncombe, Rutherford and Henderson counties remain under a mandatory evacuation order.
