Person barricaded in motel in Summerville to undergo mental evaluation

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) — A man barricaded inside of a Summerville motel room is now being transported to a local hospital for a mental evaluation, according to the Summerville Police Department.

At about 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 16, Summerville Police Department Dispatch was contacted by 63-year-old Robert Beck who said someone had a gun to his mother’s head.

According to police spokesman Lieutenant Nick Santanna, after having past dealings with Beck, authorities knew Beck’s mother is deceased.

After officers arrived at Hamilton Motel, we’re told officers asked Beck to exit the motel room. He then barricaded himself inside after telling authorities that he did not believe real officers were outside, according to a news release.

After trying negotiations to get into the room, authorities forced their way inside.

Due to refusing commands, ‘less than lethal equipment’ was used and Beck was taken into custody, a news release added.

No injuries were reported.
