CHARLESOTN, S.C. (WCBD) — A judge has decided to make a competency hearing closed to the public in the Charleston Church shooting case. However, Gergel invited the public and media to register objections to the closing of hearing, in a session at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, November 17, at the Charleston courthouse.
Gergel ruled Wednesday that Roof’s competency hearing should be closed because statements from Roof and other evidence from the hearing could prevent potential jurors from giving him a fair trial
A competency hearing for admitted shooter Dylann Roof was originally scheduled for Thursday, November 17, but was rescheduled to on Monday, November 21, at 9:00 a.m. According to an order, the move is to “provide the parties with adequate time to study the court-appointed examiner’s report.”
Jury selection is scheduled to resume on Monday, November 28.
