Identity released of inmate who died in custody of Charleston County jail

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — The Charleston County Coroner’s Office released the identity of the woman who died while in the custody of the Sheriff Cannon Detention Center.

According to Deputy Coroner Sheila Williams, Ashley Shipman, 24, of Ladson died on Monday, November 14 at the Medical University of South Carolina. Autopsy results are pending

Authorities say shortly after 4 a.m. on November 14, Charleston County deputies were notified of an unresponsive female inmate at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center.

According to preliminary reports, while detention center personnel were making security rounds in the Medical Ward, an unresponsive female inmate was discovered in the restroom, according to a news release.

We’re told Shipman was booked into the detention center on October 29 on an outstanding bench warrant for disorderly conduct.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is continuing to investigate the incident, which is a standard practice of the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office whenever there is an incident involved an in-custody death.
