Summerville neighborhood looks to council for flooding solution

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) — More than a month after Hurricane Matthew, some affected homeowners in Summerville say the real fix has not come.

At least a dozen homes were flooded last month and previously in October 2015 in the Arbor Oaks neighborhood.

Arbor Oaks HOA Vice President Melanie Yurczak says she and other neighbors believe the flooding will become more common until the town mitigates the drainage issue. “We don’t have any answers for the short term,” said Yurczak.

Yurczak points to the Sawmill Branch Drainage Canal as not being big enough to support the drainage from the developments that have been built near it in recent years. She is leading the effort to prove the town and developers may have been negligent when building Arbor Oaks. “When you start doing some research on how this neighborhood developed,” said Yurczak, “problems have been getting worse.”

News 2 has reached out to the town of Summerville and has not heard back.
