COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCBD) — The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control will reopen some shellfish harvesting areas in Beaufort County previously closed due to excessive rainfall from Hurricane Matthew.

“Oyster and clam tissue data indicate that these approved harvesting areas are suitable for harvesting,” said Mike Pearson, manager of DHEC’s Shellfish Sanitation Section.

“This reopening includes the approved shellfish beds in Areas 15, 20 and portions of Area 19. The approved areas of Skull Creek, Broad Creek, Calibogue Sound and Bull Creek in Areas 19 and 20 along with Battery Creek, Wallace Creek, Distant Island Creek and Chowan Creek in Area 15 have been reopened for harvesting.”

A few areas in Beaufort and Jasper counties remain closed and will reopen once sampling results indicate that conditions are once again suitable for harvesting. To view these areas in detail, please go to www.dhec.sc.gov/shellfish and select the Closure Update link.
