NEW YORK (WCBD) – Authorities say one New York City police sergeant has died after being shot, another one wounded in a gunbattle with a robbery suspect.
The New York Police Department’s top spokesman says the robbery suspect was killed in the exchange of gunfire Friday in the Bronx. Spokesman Stephen Davis says both sergeants have been hospitalized. The 40-year-old sergeant who died had been shot in the head, a law enforcement official said.
The suspect was also killed in the shootout with police, sources told NBC New York.
A preliminary investigation shows police first responded to a home invasion along Noble Avenue, according to a senior police official. Police followed the suspect as he fled the scene, and exchanged gunfire with him a short distance away in front of a storage warehouse, the official said.
The suspect died after being shot.
NBC New York’s chopper over the scene shows a heavy police presence in front of the warehouse, and it appears investigators were focusing on a crashed SUV on the sidewalk.
A law enforcement official says the sergeant who died was a 19-year veteran of the force and leaves behind two young children. He served as a police union delegate.
The other wounded sergeant has nine years on the job.
