Man near Summerville in stolen truck hits three vehicles, killing a husband in front of his wife

One man is dead, and another is in jail after a serious accident in Dorchester County.
It happened at about 5:30 Thursday morning at the corner of Dorchester Road and Highway 17-A.
Four vehicles were involved, including one that had just been stolen earlier Thursday morning. Investigators say Justen Lee Wilkes was driving a truck that was stolen during a burglary in the Gahagan neighborhood.
He was headed down Dorchester toward Highway 17-A. He drove across the concrete median at a high rate of speed in the opposite direction of traffic. 3 vehicles were turning onto Dorchester toward him.
He hit the back of a pickup truck driven by the wife of William Alexander Sigman. He then plowed into Mr. Sigman, who was driving behind his wife in a Porche SUV. Finally, he hit a Volvo SUV.
William Sigman died at the scene. Wilkes ran into nearby woods after the accident. He was later arrested.
We spoke with Kama Bentley, who lives next to this intersection. She says her husband drove through just minutes before the accident. “He was leaving the house around 5:15.”
When she read what happened, she was shocked. “I found something from South Carolina Highway Patrol, and it gave the time and it was still under investigation. My husband calls me around 10 o’clock every morning, and so I was like I gave him the update. I go, ‘You just missed it honey.'”
The highway patrol says they are investigating. They say they have not filed charges related to the accident at this time.
