Red Cross providing meals to families in Cross

A number of people are still without power after hurricane Matthew. Many of those are in the Cross area of Berkeley County.
Some are now into their 5th day without power. The American Red Cross is responding here in Cross by bringing hot meals to those in need. It’s something those here in the community really appreciate.
“It was just bad out here.” Larry Yape and his wife were in their Cross home during Hurricane Matthew. “It was like the devil got loose. I mean you know here and there, wind was going all over the place. Trees were falling down.”
Fortunately, there was little damage to their home. However, power has been out for 5 days. “SCE&G is trying their best to get us out here. There’s about 21 people out here who still don’t have electric. They said it will be today or for sure by 1145 tomorrow evening.”
Today Red Cross volunteers from Tennessee, South Dakota, Pennsylvania and South Carolina were providing hot meals for families like the Yapes’ next to the Cross Community Center.
They are thankful for the hot meal provided by the Red Cross until power can be restored. “Thanks to Mr. Smith of the Red Cross. He got us food out here. Yesterday, today and this evening.”
