Officer injured after cruiser is rear-ended Wednesday morning, NCPD says

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating following an early morning crash involving a North Charleston Police Officer.

According to police spokesman Spencer Pryor, the officer in his cruiser was rear-ended just before 2 a.m. on Wednesday, October 12 at Ashley Phosphate and Cross County Road.

Lance Corporal Matt Southern with the SC HP says the NCPD officer was stopped at a traffic light on Ashley Phosphate, when the driver of a 2009 Buick, later identified as Jarad Terrell Magwood, 33, of North Charleston, approached from the same direction, striking the police car in the rear.

Medics transported the officer to the Medical University of South Carolina.

Magwood sustained no injuries. He was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. Magwood is currently being held at  the Charleston County Detention Center.
