SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) — To help victims of Hurricane Matthew more easily reach family, friends and other important contacts, a Wireless Emergency Communication Center (WECC) has been deployed by Verizon in Charleston near the areas hardest hit by the storm.
More than 16,000 Verizon customers in Dorchester County lost power during Hurricane Matthew.
Wireless Emergency Communication Centers are generator-powered mobile units that have device charging and computer workstations, and wireless phones, tablets and other devices.

Teams of technicians will be on site to troubleshoot and charge up wireless phone batteries that survived the storm and/or lost power.
“Many residents otherwise have been completely cut off from their loved ones and other important contacts such as their insurance companies, so the ability to make a call, no matter how brief, can be invaluable,” said Roger Tang, president – South East Market for Verizon.
Additionally, Verizon has opened its company-owned stores in the impacted areas of Charleston to provide free local and long distance calls, phone charging and phone troubleshooting to all local residents, regardless of their personal wireless provider.
