BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) — The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is investigating following an officer-involved shooting.
At a news conference on Wednesday, October 5, authorities said that at around 5:30 p.m., Moncks Corner police received a call about an incident at a traffic detour at Old Highway 52 and Gillard road.
A male suspect at the detour knocked down some cones and shouted something at the officers before trying to run them over. Then police began to chase the suspect, according to Sheriff Duane Lewis.
The Moncks Corner police called the Berkeley County Sheriff’s office for assistance in chasing the suspect on Old Highway 52. At one point, officers did have the man stopped, but he drove off again, toward the officers.
The suspect exited his car near the DuPont employees parking lot on Cypress Gardens Road and began shooting at police from his firearm. Police returned fire and hit the suspect, who was then transported to Trident Hospital.
No officers from Moncks Corner or deputies from the Berkeley County Sheriff’s office were injured, Lewis added.
We do not know the identity of the suspect at this time.
We will keep you updated on air and online as we learn more.
SLED is investigating and the four officers involved in the gunfight have been placed on administrative leave.
Authorities at the conference said the suspect was agitated, possibly about lane reversals.
