CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) — The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office arrested the man who they say is responsible for a deadly shooting in 2014.

Devante Marquez White, 23, of James Island, is charged with murder. A bond hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, October 4 at 2 p.m.

On Saturday, December 13 at about 5 p.m., deputies responded to 1132-B Honey Hill Road in James Island in reference to a shooting. Irvin Green Sr. was found suffering from a gunshot wound. He was later pronounced dead at the Medical Unversity of South Carolina.

An investigation revealed Clifford Malcolm Whaley, Jr. as the triggerman. Whaley turned himself in on Tuesday, December 16.

Just after the incident, witnesses told investigators that they saw “Boo,” who is a good friend of Whaley Jr., leaving the area wearing what appeared to be a bloody white t-shirt.  “Boo,” later identitified as White, was seen carrying what appeared to be the victim’s black and white Nike bag, known to contained White’s valuables, according to records.

Cell phone records indicate that there was communication between White and the victim, Irvin Green Sr., moments before the murder occurred. The records also showed White and Whaley, Jr. communicated with each other an hour before the murder and moments after the murder, according to an affidavit.

According to phone mapping records, both White and Whaley Jr., and Joseph Heyward III, a third accomplice, cell phones were in close proximity of the murder during the time of the murder, the affidavit added.

After the murder, Whaley Jr. was seen getting into Heyward’s white Chevy Cavalier, which was also occupied by Heyward.

Moments after, the defendant cell phones were hitting off of cell towers for the incident location until they reached their destination in North Charleston.
