(WCBD) — Veterans of the USS Laffey will host a memorial service on Tuesday, to remember the 32 sailors who died while serving on the warship during a fierce attack on April 16, 1945 off the coast of Okinawa, Japan.
The USS Laffey Association’s Annual Memorial Service will also honor the Laffey veterans who have died in the past year.
During the attack on April 16, 1943, the USS Laffey was attacked by 22 Japanese planes. Of those, the Laffey crew shot down nine. The ship sustained hits from six kamikaze crashes and four bomb hits.
The service begins at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, aboard the USS Laffey at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum
