Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department evacuated due to bomb threat

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WCBD) — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department headquarters is being evacuated due to a bomb threat Tuesday afternoon, according to reports.

At 4:57 p.m. CMPD confirmed on social media a suspicious package was found at the headquarters and the building was being evacuated.

Just after 5 p.m., the bomb squad arrived to investigate.

According to police, the package was discovered just as activists were entering the building to deliver demands to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney. It’s unclear if the package was found in the same area or if there was any connection.

North Davidson Street near headquarters between East 5th Street and East Trade Street is closed due to police activity.
