BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) — The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is investigating following a murder in the Sangaree area.
On Wednesday, September 21 at 12:05 a.m., deputies responded to a reported death in the 200 block of Birmingham Drive. Vanessa Hilton was found dead in the home. We’re told Hilton’s 21-year-old daughter found her.
An investigation revealed her death was a result of a domestic-related incident. The Berkeley County Coroner says Vanessa Hilton died of blunt force trauma to the head and neck.
Shon E. Hilton, 39, was arrested on Federal property near Fort Stewart, Georgia on unrelated charges. We’re told Hilton is the victim’s husband and he took his wife’s maroon Pontiac G6 sedan and fled the scene, following the incident, according to a news release.
Detectives from the Fort Stewart base police contacted the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office after investigating the origin of his vehicle. Berkeley County Sheriff’s deputies tell us, a Department of Defense officer pulled Hilton over and when the officer ran the plates, discovered Hilton was in a stolen car from Berkeley. Hilton also had a stolen gun on him in the car. He now faces federal charges in Georgia for that incident.
He has been cleared for extradition back to South Carolina. A bond hearing was scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m., we’ve learned from Berkeley County authorities that Hilton will not be back in time for the bond hearing due to traffic delays getting back from Georgia. The next bond hearing scheduled for Saturday, September 24 at 9 a.m. at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center.
Hilton was arrested by the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office on June 1, 2016, for Criminal Sexual Conduct with a Minor, victim under age 16, second degree and indecent exposure. He was currently out on bond for those charges.
