Plans for new USC medical campus in Columbia taking shape


COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The University of South Carolina’s trustees have given preliminary approval to build a new $200 million home for its medical school.

The State newspaper in Columbia reports ( ) that the board unanimously approved putting the new campus on 16 acres in downtown Columbia donated by a developer.

The new campus will be across the street from Palmetto Health Richland hospital.

The medical school is planning the move as it nears the end of a lease in 2030 at its current facility near the Dorn Veterans Medical Center.
