Tropical Storm Julia is spinning off the Carolina coast, but its effects linger in one West Ashley neighborhood.
The 24-hour rain event caused a sewer overflow in the Byrnes Downs neighborhood off of Savannah Highway. Neighbors say liquid was pouring out of the manhole covers late Wednesday and early Thursday morning following the storm. “It’s not a pretty Aquafina,” said Sullivan Hamilton describing the water that gushed from the manholes.
The Charleston Water Systems affirms the overflow was a result of the West Ashley sewer tunnel not being large enough for the amount homes in the area. Crews are currently working on a new $62 million sewer tunnel they hope will accommodate the region for years to come. The project is slated to be finished sometime in the next two years.
Officials added sewer overflows are infrequent, but do occur after very heavy rains – including last year’s historic flooding.
