GREENVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – A lockdown at a South Carolina maximum security prison has been lifted.
The prison-wide lockdown at Perry Correctional in Pelzer was triggered when some inmates refused to return to their cells Friday, September 9.
The Senate Corrections Committee says the inmates knew that when they returned to their cells they would be confined there.
Staff shortages at Perry Correctional mean inmates are regularly locked in their cells for long stretches. The lockdowns prompted an April riot in which an officer was beaten and taken hostage by inmates.
