PELZER, SC (WSPA) – Perry Correctional Institution remains on lockdown as of 5pm after inmates refused to return to their cells.
The Department of Corrections said in a statement that the facility was placed on lockdown around 11:15am Saturday as a precautionary measure.
Senator Karl Allen told 7News that a small number of inmates, approximately 10, refused commands to return to their cells yesterday and were not involved in a riot.
Sen. Allen also says this is a problem relating to under staffing at the facility and that he will be visiting the facility Sunday.
Visitations have also been halted and Allen says he will ask the director to resume visitations Sunday as long as it is safe and clear.
Perry Correctional Institution is a high security prison in Pelzer.
