Toddler fatally shot at apartment complex in Richland County

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) — Two toddlers have been shot — one fatally— in an accidental shooting at an apartment complex in Columbia, according to WIS.

Richland County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the Meredith Square Townhome apartment complex at around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 1 in reference to shots fired.

The victims, who are sisters, are said to be 2- and 4-years-old, according to Richland County Sgt. Brittany Scott.  One of the toddlers were shot in the upper body by a handgun, Scott added.

Medics transported both children to Palmetto Health Richland. The station reports one child was in serious condition before undergoing surgery and passing away. The second toddler’s injuries were not life-threatening.

The father was also injured in the hand. The mother was in the home at the time but was not injured.

Authorities say the father told deputies he was trying to make sure a gun was safe when he accidentally fired the weapon, killing his 2-year-old daughter.
