ST. MATTHEWS, S.C. (AP) – A South Carolina grandmother has been charged with ill treatment of animals in the dragging death of a dog.
Multiple media outlets say 66-year-old Rita Mintz was arrested by Calhoun County sheriff’s deputies, who said she had dragged a dog behind a vehicle Aug. 26. Deputies said the dog died, apparently from its wounds.
Mintz told WLTX-TV after she was released that the incident was an accident. She said she’d been trying to get the dog away from her grandson because it had snapped at the boy.
It wasn’t immediately clear whether Mintz has an attorney. A telephone listing for a Rita Mintz in Orangeburg wasn’t in service.
