ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WCBD) — An Orangeburg man has been charged with kidnapping after witnesses saw him dragging a woman by her hair.
Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said deputies subdued a man involved in a hostage situation who was believed to under the influence of a unknown substance.
“This could have been dangerous for all involved,” the sheriff said. “However, these deputies were able to secure not only the suspect but a woman and her child.” Derrick Furtick, 29, has been charged with first-degree burglary and kidnapping.
During a hearing on Thursday, bond was denied.
The incident began early on Friday, August 19 when reports came in of a man dragging a woman across a Dena Lane yard by her hair. During the incident, the woman yelled to neighbors she was being kidnapped.
Deputies arrived as a 10-year-old boy attempted to free the woman as she struggled with the male.
As deputies confronted the man, he shielded himself from any attempts to use non-lethal force by tightening his grip on the woman.
However, as he dragged the woman away from approaching deputies, he stumbled. Deputies then used the opportunity to separate the woman and boy from the subject. Noting the man appeared to be under the influence of a substance, deputies secured the man and transported him to the hospital.
