COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – South Carolina Lt. Gov. Henry McMaster has all but announced he’s running for governor again in two years.
McMaster told state Republican Chairman Matt Moore during a Facebook live broadcast Thursday that he’s “hoping to be in” the 2018 governor’s race.
McMaster finished third in a four-way Republican primary in the 2010 governor’s race. He ultimately backed the eventual winner, Nikki Haley, and is her lieutenant governor.
Many other Republicans have already been mentioned as potential candidates in 2018, including Attorney General Alan Wilson. State Rep. Tommy Pope of York has already said he intends to run.
McMaster and Moore also discussed the presidential race. McMaster was the first elected official in the country to endorse Donald Trump and said there’s a special energy around Trump’s candidacy.
