Family sues prison officials in inmate’s 2015 death

BISHOPVILLE, S.C. (AP) – The family of an inmate who died of an untreated kidney infection last year at Bishopville’s Lee Correctional Institution is suing state prison officials.

The Greenville News reports Victor Rogers’ family filed a federal lawsuit Monday against the South Carolina Department of Corrections saying at least 12 people connected with the prison knew Rogers was in extreme pain but didn’t provide or request medical care for him prior to his March 2015 death.

The lawsuit says Rogers was too weak to walk for at least seven days before being found dead in his cell.

An autopsy revealed he died from sepsis, resulting from the infection.

Corrections spokeswoman Stephanie Givens declined to comment on the lawsuit Tuesday.

Rogers had been serving time in prison since 2013 on a burglary charge.
