Man stabbed while sleeping in Marion Square, suspect arrested

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — A man was stabbed in the neck in Marion Square about 12:50 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, according to Charleston Police.

William Bruce Watson Jr. was stabbed with a screwdriver while sleeping under a tree. He was taken to MUSC with four stab wounds.

Billy Kendrick, 58, of 573 Meeting Street is charged with assault and battery 2nd degree. Kendrick was arrested at the scene.

Kendrick admitted he stabbed Watson, telling police it was because Watson owed him $400.

Police say Kendrick and the victim know each other, but detectives are trying to determine why the stabbing occurred.

Kendrick appeared in bond court Monday where he was issued a $30,000 bond. Kendrick is currently in the Charleston County jail at this time.
