Man now facing murder charges after cellmate is strangled to death

Documents say the incident was over food

RIDGEVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) — The man who authorities say is responsible for the death of an inmate at Lieber Correctional Institution is now charged with murder.

Authorities served a warrant for murder to Michael Jerome Brice, 34 on Tuesday, August 16.

An arrest warrant stated Brice strangled the victim, 24-year-old Ryan Mansfield, with malice and aforethought. The incident was over the theft of food. We’re told Brice made a statement implicating himself in the crime.

According to prison records, Mansfield was serving a five-year sentence for burglary and grand larceny from Richland County. He was set to be released in March.

Brice started a 13-year sentence for drug and weapons charges from York County in January.
