NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — Investigators say a teenager was shot dead at his grandparent’s house in North Charleston over the weekend.
Demarco Jones, 19, died from a gunshot wound to the head. The shooting occurred on Madden Drive, just off Dorchester Road, at 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
Jones was unresponsive and did not have a pulse when first responders arrived, according to an incident report.
Family, friends and neighbors of the slain teenager gathered Monday night in the front yard where he died.
“For anybody to get gunned down period is horrible, but a 19-year-old,” said Eric Nelson, a neighbor, “what could a 19-year-old have done to deserve that?”
Police say Jones and his grandfather were sitting outside when the shots rang out. The teen’s murder marks the 20th homicide in North Charleston in 2016. At one point in this year, the city had a homicide rate per capita higher than Chicago.
North Charleston Police Department says they have no suspects or motive at this time.
