Man accused of killing daughter released on bond

HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A Hendersonville father accused of shooting and killing his 11-year-old daughter as she came home from school has been released on bond.

Timothy Batts, 29, left the Sumner County jail late Friday night. He was released after the judge decided his $1 million bond was too high and changed it to $500,000.

Family and friends packed the courtroom and cheered as the bond was lowered. A video of the scene was posted to Facebook by a family member.

The video also showed Batts smiling as he walked out of the jail and thanked his supporters.

“I want to say thank you to everybody. Thank you for the love and support, I appreciate everybody,” he stated.

When asked if they could hurt his image Pellegrin responded, “Yeah, certainly that’s possible. You know, anytime anyone is in any sort of case where they are in the spotlight they need to becognisant of public perceptions.”

Pellegrin also said his client is suffering and is very remorseful, but that he will ask him to stay off social media moving forward.

Batts is accused of shooting and killing his daughter, Timea, as she came home from school Monday afternoon.

At the time of the shooting, he told officers his daughter entered the house and said she had been shot.

Once in custody, authorities said Batts changed his story and explained that he was asleep when Tamia came home. He reportedly said she scared him, leading him to reach for his gun and fire.

However, during a court hearing on Friday, Det. Neal Harris testified that home security footage actually showed Batts awake and walking around with a gun in his hand just minutes before his daughter came home.

Batts has been charged with reckless homicide, tampering with evidence, false reporting, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
