Local Gymnasts aspire to become Olympians

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Team USA’s success in women’s gymnastics has spread to the Lowcountry.

Gymnastics is a sport that’s becoming a household name thanks to two straight gold medals by Team USA and stars like Gabby Douglas, Aly Raisman, and Simone Biles.

In Charleston, the Summer Olympics have had a direct correlation with Flip! Gym‘s growth.

The gymnastics & cheerleading gym opened in West Ashley in 2012, during the Summer games in London. Four years later, owner Halle McComb has opened a second location in James Island with the grand opening on August 6, the same day as the first round of games.

“It’s hard for me to even sleep,” said McComb. Between turns on the bar, the gymnasts can’t quit gossiping about their role models’ success on Team USA.

“It’s amazing because they show you things that you’ll be able to do in the future if you work for them,” said 11-year-old, Ada Misenheimer.
